English seminars for safety assessors a great success

More than 130 safety assessors registered for the English-speaking seminars for safety assessors in Warsaw on 30 September 2014 and in Istanbul on 2 December 2014.

After three basic presentations from experienced speakers on the legal background of the safety assessment in the EU and the qualifications of the safety assessor, data and information sources and assessment of the dermal absorption of cosmetic ingredients all participants were discussing three practical exercises on the safety assessment of selected products in groups of about ten persons. These exercises had been sent to them before the meeting so that they had the chance to look at the data relevant for the safety assessment and processing of the exercises before the meeting. Participants came from countries like Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Morocco, UK, Ireland,Spain, Belgium, Switzerland etc.

These seminars are held in German since many years. The system was established in 2007 by the German Society for Scientific and Applied Cosmetics (DGK) together with IKW, the German industry association of Beauty and Household Care. The seminar on 30 September 2014 in Warsaw was offered together with the two polish associations, “Polish Association of Cosmetics and Home Care Products Producers” and “Polish Union of Cosmetics Industry” in conjunction with the HPCI-Conference which took place in Warsaw on 1 and 2 October 2014. The seminar on 2 December in Istanbul was offered in conjunction with the HPCI-Conference which took place on 3 and 4 December 2014.

All participants were very well prepared for the discussions in the working groups. In the final forum they commented and also asked a lot of questions. We were really impressed.” said Birgit Huber, IKW, after the meeting.

All participants were of the opinion that such a seminar and also the courses are of importance for their daily work and asked the organizers to repeat it in one or two years.

The safety assessor seminars are complementary to the education programme for safety assessors which was established in 1998. The concept of the continuing education courses for safety assessors consists of 7 two-day courses on different subjects of importance for safety assessors e.g. chemistry, toxicology, dermatology. Speakers are experts from the respective disciplines from university, government and industry. Since 2013 these courses (which can be attended in any order) are also offered in English for all involved in safety assessment – today or in the future. At the end of each course there is an examination on the knowledge acquired (on a voluntary basis). All participants receive a certificate for the respective course and participants successfully completing all seven courses receive a certificate for the series.

The series is divided into the following courses:

Exposure to Cosmetic Products / Percutaneous Penetration
Topical Safety, Immunology and Sensitization
Metabolism, Kinetics and Structure-Activity Relationships
Carcinogenesis and Mutagenesis
General and Systemic Toxicology Including Risk Assessment
Reproduction Toxicology
Microbiological Safety of Cosmetic Products
